Why Convert JFIF to PNG?
PNG is universally supported and solves every JFIF compatibility problem instantly.
Opens on Every Device
PNG is natively supported in every app, OS, and platform on earth — Windows Photo Viewer, macOS Preview, Android Gallery, iOS Photos, email clients, browsers, and design tools. The .jfif extension causes errors in many of these; PNG never does.
No Additional Quality Loss
Your JFIF file is already JPEG-compressed. Converting to PNG decodes that data and stores it losslessly — no second round of compression is applied. The PNG faithfully represents exactly what was in the JFIF.
100% Private
Your JFIF images are converted entirely inside your browser using the Canvas API. Nothing is ever uploaded to a server. Your files stay on your device from start to finish.
Instant — No Library Needed
JFIF files contain standard JPEG data that every browser can decode natively. Conversion uses the built-in Canvas API — no external library to load, no delay. Results appear in under a second.
Batch Conversion
Convert an entire folder of JFIF files at once. Select all files, convert simultaneously, and download everything with a single click — no processing one file at a time.
Always Free

JFIF to PNG: Everything You Need to Know
If you've downloaded an image from a website, saved a photo from a browser, or received a file with a .jfif extension that refuses to open, you're not alone. JFIF is one of the most misunderstood image formats — and one of the most easily fixed.
What Is a JFIF File?
JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It is the formal standard that defines exactly how JPEG image data is packaged into a file — the colour space, pixel aspect ratio, and thumbnail metadata structure. In other words, JFIF is JPEG. Every standard JPG file you've ever opened is technically a JFIF file internally. The only difference is the file extension: .jfif instead of .jpg.
The .jfif extension became common because Google Chrome and some web browsers began saving downloaded images with the .jfif extension instead of .jpg when the server sends a JPEG image with specific MIME type headers. The image data inside is completely standard JPEG — only the extension changed.
Why Won't My JFIF File Open?
The image data inside a JFIF file is perfectly valid JPEG — but many applications only recognise image files by their extension, not their actual content. Common apps that fail to open .jfif files include:
- Windows Photo Viewer and Photos app — may show "We can't open this file" for .jfif
- Microsoft Office apps — Word, PowerPoint, and Excel may refuse to insert .jfif images
- Android Gallery apps — many third-party gallery apps don't list .jfif in recognised extensions
- Email clients — Outlook and some webmail clients may block .jfif attachments as unrecognised
- Design tools — older versions of Photoshop, Canva, and similar apps may not accept .jfif files
- Social media upload forms — some platforms reject .jfif as an unsupported file type
Converting to PNG eliminates every one of these problems immediately.
Can I Just Rename .jfif to .jpg?
In many cases, yes — renaming image.jfif to image.jpg works because the image data inside is identical JPEG data. However, this approach has drawbacks:
- Renaming requires changing file extension visibility settings in Windows, which many users find unintuitive
- Some apps still reject the file even after renaming due to MIME type checks
- Renaming in bulk across many files is cumbersome without scripting
- Converting to PNG is a single-step process that works reliably in every scenario

Where Do JFIF Files Come From?
- Google Chrome — saving images from certain websites defaults to .jfif when the server sends
Content-Type: image/jpegwithout a filename in the headers - Microsoft Edge — similar behaviour to Chrome for certain image downloads
- Screenshot tools — some third-party screenshot utilities save JFIF by default
- Web scrapers and APIs — automated tools that download images sometimes produce .jfif files
- Digital cameras — some older camera firmware used the .jfif extension
